Japheth J Omojuwa

Founder and Chief Strategist

Omojuwa is the founder and Chief Strategist at The Alpha Reach, a Digital Media Company operating from Abuja and Lagos in Nigeria. He is a Nigerian Thought Leader and former lecturer (on Africa: New Media and Civil Disobedience and Africa’s Democratic prospects and challenges) at the Free University of Berlin, Germany. Omojuwa was named on a list of Africa’s top “50 Movers and Shakers” by Switzerland’s Credit Suisse. Heis a media entrepreneur, blogger, farmer and has featured for some of Nigeria’s most respected newspapers, including The Punchand Leadership Newspapers. Omojuwa has been seen, read or heard on several, TV, radio, online and print media including: CNN, the World Economic Forum, BBC, DW, France 24, SABC, Joy FM Ghana, Jeune Afrique, and other pan-African media platforms.

For the past seven years, he has played active roles in the emergence of Nigeria’s social media landscape work as curator, Omojuwa.com and founding several other web platforms cutting across fashion and style, sports, business and general news platforms. He has been Editor of Africa’s foremost Human Rights and Liberty website, AfricanLiberty.org for the last five years. AfricanLiberty is supported by Washington based Think Tank Atlas Network.

As a speaker, JJ has participated in various economic, civil society and media development panels as well as at universities across several countries some of which include: the London School of Economics, London, New York University, New York, Hertie School of Governance, Berlin, Universidad Francisco Marroquín, Guatemala,Catholic University of East Africa, Nairobi,Technical University, Dortmund, Kibarak University, Kenya , Catholic University of East Africa, Nairobi Kenyaand several in Nigeria. He was a panelist at London School of Economics’ 2016 Africa Summit as Chair of the Technology panel and as a panelist on the Social Media panel. He was a delegate at the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+ 20 in Brazil. He was a Speaker at Youth Marketer Converge Conference, which featured Jimi Wales, CEO Wikipedia. He was a delegate at the Open Forum Conference at Cape Town’s International Convention Centre on the invitation of the Open Society in South Africaand has led panels organized by the World Economic Forum(WEF), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD), TheAfrican Development Bank(AfDB), the Germany Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development BMZ, The African-German Foundation, The Association of African Ambassadors in Germany, West African Civil Society Institute(WACSI), amongst other local and international organisations. He was one of the speakers at the 2016 Antigua Forum in Central America. In August 2016, he participated in the United States Government’s flagship exchange programme, the International Visitors Leadership Programme (IVLP).

The leadership of the African Unioninvited him in 2014 to be part of the Africa Re-imagination Creative Hub (ARCH) to contribute to its Agenda for Africa 2063 project. He has since become a regular feature at African Union conferences. He serves on the Communication team of the African Union’s Democratic Governance Trends. He was a delegate at the Warsaw Dialogue for Democracy in 2013 and was on the inaugural panel on Africa at the prestigious Halifax International Security Forum, Halifax, Canada 2014. The Halifax Forum is considered the “Davos of International Security.” He is now a regular at the Halifax International Security Forum. He participated as a panelist at a side event during the United Nations General Assembly in New York where he spoke on the need to use data and facts as tools in activism and policy making in Africa.

Omojuwa worked with ECOWAS in the run-up to the 2016 Ghana elections helping to train Ghanaian journalists and media practitioners on the role of digital media in the electioneering process. This was repeated in 2017 for the Sierra Leonean elections as he engaged journalists and politicians in Freetown. He is consistently listed amongst Africa’s most influential personalities, including a 2017 listing by The US based @Entrepreneur as one of 10 African Online Entrepreneurs to watch in 2017. Omojuwa was named by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation supported African Bloggers Award 2016 as the continent’s No. 1 Twitter personality.

 

Omojuwa attended the prestigious King’s College, Lagos. His university education was at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta,Ogun Statewhere he studied Agricultural Economics. He tweets via @Omojuwa where he reaches over 10 million people every week. He is an alumnus of the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers. JJ. Omojuwa founded the Omojuwa Foundation in 2017 to focus on three major areas; Entrepreneurship, Education and Community. The foundation supported over 50 entrepreneurs with business grants in 2017 while a special grant was reserved for extremely poor single mothers. The Omojuwa Foundation intervened in a major flooding incident in Benue State, central Nigeria, by giving grants to activists and organisations on ground to assist in feeding and housing victims of the flood.
